The Magic Of Maca Root

Maca Roots

Maca is a small root which grows in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It has no problem growing in altitudes above twelve thousand feet. It is an extremely hardy plant.

The Maca root looks similar to a radish or turnip but has many more health benefits. It’s roots have been harvested as a source of food by the Inca people for over two thousand years.

Not wanting to over-harvest wild maca, they now cultivate it to keep up with the growing demand from other countries, such as the United States, Asia and Europe who have found out about it’s healing properties.

Maca is in the “Super-Food” category because of it’s rich nutritional profile. It is a source of naturally balanced proteins, starches, sugars, fiber, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and just about everything you could want in a health supplement.

Many people take a maca supplement instead of a synthetic multi-vitamin. It’s all natural and so absorbs into the body better.

Because of it’s ability to support and enhance healthy sexual function in men and women, Maca root is sometimes called “Natures Viagra”. It has been shown to increase male sperm activity and enhance physical endurance during sex.

Maca is also known by another name, “Peruvian Ginseng”. Maca is an adaptogen like ginseng and can help protect the body and mind from stress. It enhances strength and stamina and is good for clear thinking and a better memory. It is a great general health tonic.

An adaptogen is not like a tranquilizer. It helps you beat stress and fatigue when taken over a period of time. You have to take it every day for at least a couple of weeks to start feeling the beneficial effects.

There are several ways you can enjoy Maca root. Like ginseng, maca can be eaten raw if desired. Or it can be cooked into soups. The dried powdered root can be made into tea or taken in capsules or tablets.

Maca has a very long shelf life and will last quite a while if kept in an airtight container, away from heat and light.

Maca can be sprinkled on salads too. It has a nice malty, nutty flavor you might enjoy.

Maca root is considered safe to consume. Millions of people have eaten it for thousands of years. Just to be safe though, never give to children or take if pregnant or nursing without first talking to your doctor.
