First of all, let’s take a moment to talk about what spirulina actually is. Then we’ll discuss why you would want to take it in addition to or instead of a multi-vitamin.

Spirulina is considered a blue-green algae. It is a single celled algae and grows in bodies of warm, fresh water. The cells are larger in size than most algaes and adhere in colonies, making the plant easier to harvest. Under the microscope, it would look spiral in shape. This is where it’s name comes from. Spirulina has been in existence on this planet for over 3.5 billion years.

This particular algae was eaten on a daily basis by the Aztecs for hundreds of years. It was also very popular among the people living in the deserts of Africa.

A good natural source of spirula is Lake Texcoco, discovered by researchers from France in 1960, but Spirulina is now cultivated all over the world in man-made pools. It has often been called “The food of the future”, as it multiplies very rapidly and is packed with high quality nutrition.

Spirulina contains about 70 percent protein and has all of the essential amino acids needed for life. Plus, they are all balanced perfectly by nature. 70 percent protein is extremely high for any food. For example, beef is only 22 percent protein. It is also a better quality of protein than other vegetable sources, such as legumes.

This health-packed algae contains many vital nutrients, such as protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, trace minerals and enzymes. It is also very high in chlorophyll.

This algae also contains important essential fatty acids the body needs, like (ALA), (LA), (GLA), (DHA), (EPA) and (SDA). It is rich in pigments, including chlorophyll, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and others.

Even though the nutrients contained in Spirulina come in much smaller amounts than your average drugstore multi-vitamin, they are very much superior. They are in a natural form and highly assimilable. The body easily absorbs these beneficial nutrients and uses them to improve and maintain good health.

Algae are grouped according to their predominate color. There are green, blue-green, brown and red algaes. Spirulina is classified as blue-green because it contains phycocyanin (blue) and also chlorophyll (green) pigments.

Even though this algae may resemble kelp, it isn’t a sea plant and should not be confused with the salt water sea vegetables. Spirulina likes alkaline, fresh water with a pH range from eight to eleven.

As you have read, spirula has a great nutritional profile and is sometimes called “natures multi-vitamin”. I personally prefer to consume it rather than a regular multi-vitamin supplement found at the drug store. The nutrients are all in balance because it is a natural whole food and the body can easily absorb them.

While you can buy spirula powder, I prefer to take the tablets. I always take six tablets in the morning and sometime more in the afternoon. It’s not that expensive compared to other health supplements and most people will find it easily affordable.
