Definition of Adaptogen An adaptogen is a plant substance that enhances the body in a nonspecific way to resist any form of stress. The term was first coined in 1947 by a Russian scientist by the name of N.V. Lazarev. Furthermore it must not cause harm to the body in any way, but have a balancing effect while not over stimulating.
