The herb Chamomile has been in constant use for thousands of years. It has been used to treat a plethora of ailments and health troubles, such as stomach upset, diarrhea, gas, insomnia and even anxiety.

Most of the time Chamomile is taken as a hot tea, but can also be used externally for skin problems, like lesions and hemorrhoids.

The flowering tops are the part of the Chamomile plant that is used for it’s medicinal properties. These are what are used to make the healthy Chamomile tea.

The the tea is much more popular, Chamomile tops can be stewed and drained, creating a yellow broth. Sometimes sugar is added to improve the taste. Before prescription and off the shelf gas relief medicine was available, Chamomile was used to relieve gas.

Chamomile tea was often given to women suffering from menstrual cramps. The ancient Egyptians found it to be a very effective remedy that brought quick relief. Science has recently confirmed this fact. One study verified that drinking tea made with Chamomile elevated glycine levels in the urine. Glycine is a substance knows to calm muscle spasms. This is believed to be what alleviates the painful cramping.

Chamomile tea was a favorite remedy for those feeling nauseous. Peppermint, licorice and fennel seeds were also included to enhance the treatment.

Chamomile is effective for relieving bowel pain and intestinal bloating due to gas. Many people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, stomach flu and gastroenteritis frequently drink Chamomile tea.

A great use for Chamomile tea that isn’t so well known is for the treatment of migraine headaches. If you drink the tea as soon as you feel the headache coming on, it will be most effective.

Another well known benefit of Chamomile is the soothing and calming effect it has on the nervous system. If you are feeling mentally upset and anxious, just try taking some chamomile capsules or tea. It will also help relax tense muscles, making you feel a lot better mentally and physically. For this reason, it has always been a very popular sleep aid and is often taken right before bedtime.

Chamomile also possesses antibacterial properties and can boost your immune system as well. This makes it perfect for combating colds.

There is a special oil in the Chamomile plant that can be used topically. It has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. It’s a useful treatment for psoriasis, eczema, inflamed skin and infections. This was widely used before modern medicine came on the scene and was a common remedy for these types of skin conditions.

Other problems that could be treated topically were diaper rash, minor burns and bug bites. Mother always kept some Chamomile on hand for just these problems. It was often used along with oatmeal to make a soothing bath to relieve minor skin irritations and discomforts.

Chamomile was frequently used by the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians as a poultice they would apply on wounds received in battle to heal them more quickly. There is some recent scientific research that confirms this fact.

It can also be used topically as a beauty aid. It can effectively reduce dark circles under the eyes and relieve eye fatigue. Just take two Chamomile tea bags and soak in warm water for five minutes. Remove from the water and let them cool. Lie down on your back and place them over your closed eyes for at least fifteen minutes.

The substance in Chamomile is now being tested for it’s possible treatment of diabetes. Some preliminary studies indicate that tea made from this plant could prevent the progression of this disease and also may be useful for hyperglycemia.

These are just some of the uses for Chamomile. There are many more.

Precautions: Do not take Chamomile if you have allergies to airborne particles, such as hay fever. Chamomile is part of the Ragweed family and may have an adverse effect on you. If you are pregnant or nursing, never take Chamomile or any other health supplement without first talking to your doctor.
